One possibility of integrating database systems is to create a unified data store of an organisation, into which data about different systems is recorded and from which data transformation to information (reports and ad hoc enquiries) and knowledge is carried out. It enables to decrease the problem of different interpretation of data ("multiple truth"), because the business rules are the same for everybody in the form of metadata.
